Welcome to Tutoring Services & Academic Success! You have joined a team of people dedicated to student success. We want to ensure you're well-trained to do the this very important job. (Para español, utilice las funciones de traducción en Google Chrome y YouTube.)
New Tutor Orientation is for tutors who are newly hired. You also will be expected to attend the next available semester Tutor Training, held each Fall and Spring semester.
During NTO, we will touch on the most important topics covered more completely during Tutor Training. You will take four quizzes, and you may use the resources during the quizzes. Yes, these are "open-book" tests!
Finally, add your orientation hours to your timesheet when done today! (Note: If it's the first week of your pay period, the timesheet may not yet be activated.)
The best way for you to quickly learn about Tutoring Services & Academic Success is to surf the department website.
You may not expect a lot of ethical issues with tutoring, besides the specter of cheating. However, this part of training will help you become familiar with some possible sticky situations you may experience as a tutor with MATC and how to handle them.
It is not required for the quiz, but if you are curious you can check out MATC's FERPA statement.
As a tutor, you have responsibilities that must be met. You also have rights, outlined in the NTO manual. Please plan on attending Fall or Spring training to receive the full training on your rights and responsibilities as a tutor.
New tutors often ask for tips regarding how to tutor. We offer "the big three."
1. Sit on your hands, figuratively.
We mean that you should not be the one using the mouse, keyboard or pencil. Your student should be doing the work, with your guidance as needed.
2. Answer questions with questions, literally.
It encourages students to think and research. A classic example: Student asks, "What does this term mean?" Tutor answers, "Where do you think we could find the definition?"
3. Never contradict the instructor in front of students.
It undermines student confidence in us as educators. (Obviously, if instructions are unclear, you should ask for clarification ... but if the instructor is incorrect, you should politely and privately let the instructor know.)
Navigate is a vital part of your work as a tutor. With Navigate, you can keep track of your visits with students, information we need to ensure we keep our grant funding.
The video tutorial walks tutors through using Navigate to track visits with students. Learn how to:
You can find the Navigate (for employees) link via the Tutors Toolbox.
You also can find the EAB Navigate (for employees) link on the login page of MATC.edu.
Use the same login and password you use for your other MATC accounts, including Gmail and Blackboard.
Navigate works best in Chrome or Firefox; if you get an error, try a different browser/version. There is an app for mobile use.
Tutoring Services & Academic Support offices are in C271 in the C Building (Creative Building), also home to Milwaukee PBS, 1036 N. 8th St. (for nav system purposes).
Make sure you get paid!
When you are done with the four quizzes today, add the two hours for your orientation to your Self-Service timecard. (Note: If it's the first week of your pay period, the timecard may not yet be activated.)
Use the How to Fill Out Your Timecard tutorial if you're unsure of the steps.
Going forward: Submit your timecard by the due date. Walk-in tutors, submit your attendance sheet the same day.
If you are sick and plan to stay home, email Sarah Helding, your support staff and, if you work in class, your instructor(s). One group email to all of them works :)
Help students find you at work!
Please remember to submit a photo for the website and, once you've started working, to check the accuracy of your walk-in hours on our Tutoring Schedules.
For privacy purposes, tutor photos are alphabetized by first name because we do not give students your last names. We recommend you not share personal contact info, such as phone numbers, with students. You may share your MATC Gmail, but be aware that students will learn your last name from Gmail.

The offices for Tutoring Services & Academic Support are inside the Math & Science Center, C271 Downtown.
