Coming out is a process by which someone accepts and affirms their identity and/or orientation and shares it with others. It is not a one-time event; for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it is a decision made carefully--the individual might be out in some spaces, perhaps with friends and family, but in with others, such as coworkers. The decision is based on safety, comfort, trust and readiness.
There are some dos and don'ts to follow when someone comes out to you. You can read more by downloading the full PDF below.
Don't downplay the significance of the share. Do know that this is a huge sign of trust.
Don't go around telling everyone else what you know. Do check to see if this is something you are to keep confidential.
Don't forget that they are still the person you knew before they came out to you. Do remember that their identity and/or orientaiton is just one of their many facets as an individual.
Do ask how you can best be supportive of them.
