Cathy Lechmaier was the student life coordinator of South Campus for 39 years. When she retired in 2016, the same year as the makerspace project, Student Goverment felt it fitting to name the makerspace, a place of learning and exploration, after someone who devoted their life to helping students expand their horizons through MATC.
Visit the makerspace to spark your creativity, complete an art-based assignment, or have a mindful moment. Makerspace assistants host a variety of events and activities through the year, and supplies are available for basic projects to use on-campus whenever the makerspace is open. The following is a list of supplies found in the space for use:
A gift from the estate of Rose Brannon, there are hundreds of rubber stamps available for use in the Makerspace, and for circulation to work on your own projects at home. Many sets are discontinued and no longer commercially available, and include items from the Stamp Gallery, Craft Smart, Northwoods, and Stampin' Up collections. Browse electronically here.
Otamatones are portable electronic synthesizers. Created in Japan, these musical instruments are easy to play. There are three pitch settings, a slide for pitch adjustment, and a vibrato option.
Specdrums are app-enabled musical rings. Use them anywhere - they recognize colors and play sounds based on color recognition.
The Makerspace contains a variety of writing prompt games and tools which can be checked out or used on-sight. We also host creative writing workshops and co-host the Wonderful Words Writers Conference with the Imaginative Fiction student organization.
